About

TwunLog turns Twitter tweets on running (twuns)  into a running log. From this you’re able to track and compare your progress with the ones you follow.

Following

This is a one way relationship. When you sign in to TwunLog it looks through the last 100 people you’ve select to follow in Twitter and checks to see if they’ve logged any runs in TwunLog. If there is a match, they are added to your list of TwunLog followers. This sync will happen every time you log in. You can also follow runners inside TwunLog, this following does not sync with your twitter account, like wise when you unfollow someone in TwunLog it doesn’t sync with your twitter account.

Public TwunLine

This list of tweets is filtered from all the running status updates on twitter. The filter is two part, is there a run with a decipherable mileage amount and hide the bland API driven posts from the big name running logs. When you enter your TwunLog page, ex: http://twunlog.com/your_twitter_name you will see all the statuses, this will give you a chance to correct the runs the filter was unable to process. This is to be developed. You’ll also be able to flag an update as “not a run”.

Quality

The filter is only so good. Tweets like “off to a 8 mile run” are difficult to programmatically differentiate from “just got back from a…” but over time it will get better, for now I will concentrate on the Twunners ability to correct this with in their account, so don’t put too much stock in the total mileage for the site, there is some degree of fluff, “congratulations @ultraguy on your 100 mile run” for example.

Extracting Run Distance
This isn’t easy, the algorithm is only so good. To ensure your twuns (a tweeted run) is indexed at TwunLog make sure you have the following text in your tweets: “Just ran 3.4 miles in 0:34:42″ or “4.45 mile run in 0:31:23″. This will get better over time, to track the progress, see this page, but also remember you will soon be able to edit your runs to correct the incompetence of my code.

Your ability to do things at TwunLog derives from you first authenticating with your twitter credentials. Don’t worry, if i was able to snatch your username and password, no would would use “Sign in with Twitter”, if you like to read more check out the official OAuth site.

Reports

For now I’d like to keep it simple but as time passes and more runs are logged, more reports will appear. Feel free to comment with your ideas. If you’re looking for charts, there are many other options out there for a more feature rich solution. This site is meant to be to the point, like twitter.

Run Duration/Time & Pace

It’s amazing how infrequently people tweet about their pace or run time. Almost always, its the running logs that post to twitter that track this, but for casual Twitter users its just the distance. With this in mind, and in the spirit of keeping the site simple, I’ll follow this trend for now.

Sources

The beauty of TwunLog is its ability to funnel all the posts from all the major running logs into one spot. As more sources are indexed at TwunLog they will be add to the list.

is there a way to delete runs that were duplicated accidentally on twitter?

This should be live, the ability to manage runs, very soon.

if you run without program (say runkeeper) and you post “just did a run of 8 km in 0:40:00 will it pick it up? Or do we use a hashtag (say #twuns)?

Interesting idea, though not yet sure how useful. One big problem, could we have some modern units? I mean you can’t still be using miles in the 2nd decade of the 21st century, surely!

@gijsbregt You can now delete runs. Simply log in and manage your account.

@bristowp The plan is better accommodate mi _and_ ki. The site will switch to ki when every country on the planet agrees that ki is a ‘modern unit’ and simultaneously switches. :)
